2015 Season Preview

Bayhawks
(Home Field: Great Mills High School)

A team that showed great improvement last season will look to build on its first playoff appearance in 2014. A highly organized squad under second year manager Thad Hand, the Bayhawks will make their home at Great Mills High School this year establishing themselves as the league's second Southern St. Mary's county based team.

Black Sox
(Home Field: Rainbow Construction Field)

After several recent years of highly competitive play, the Black Sox will look to have a breakout season. The talent potential this group measures up with any team. Under the leadership of long time league veteran Garnell Young, consistency in finishing off games and doing damage in the playoffs will be this team's main objectives.

Bumpy Oak
(Home Field: Rainbow Construction Field)

As a mainstay at or near the top of league standings year after year, the Bombers have earned more league championships in the last 15 years than all other current teams combined. The team uses that established standard as it strives to compete at a championship level once again. Under established leader Ray Michael, Bumpy Oak remains as resilient a squad as they come and should be expected to compete at the highest level once again.

Cubs
(Home Field: Lackey High School)

A new team for the 2015 season that is expected to have several familiar faces. In which should be a good mix of established veteran and up-and-coming young talent, the Cubs will look to be competitive immediately. Under the direction of league veteran Tony Sweeney, he has proven the ability to assemble championship teams in the past that compete at the highest levels.

St. Mary's
(Home Field: St. Mary's College)

As the longest tenured team in the league, the Door has been built on excellent pitching and defense in the past. Now the squad is developing some good young bats to go with it and so will expect to compete with high potential again this year. Returning manager Drew Willard has established consistency and will look to get this team over the hump as they strive to put all the pieces together and compete for another league championship.

Storm
(Home Field: Gwynn Park High School)

Another team that showed rapid improvement last season, the Storm is constantly striving to improve upon its good core of players. As the team further establishes itself within the league, returning manager Larry McCall looks to further build the experience of some talented young players and compete at a higher level. The Storm will make their home at Gwynn Park High School this season establishing a Northern Charles County / Southern Prince George's county presence.

Western Charles
(Home Field: Rainbow Construction Field)

After a championship 2014 season, the Natty Bohs will strive to defend that championship as its primary goal. While remaining very competitive in recent years, the team has established itself as an experienced squad able to overcome adversity. With returning Manager Tony Stefko, they will again strive for consistency competing at the highest level game after game this season.

A Message From Rob Adams

Hi everyone,
A lot of you (almost 60) have responded to my questions about your
favorite/memorable moments during your time in the league. These
responses will be included in my upcoming book about the Charles-St.
Mary's League - in a chapter that features stories from players "in
their own words."
As work on the book begins its final phase, I'd like to give a
final opportunity for any past or present players/managers/officers to
answer the following five questions. You can email, mail, or phone me
the responses. I will gratefully include them in the chapter.

1. Name the teams you played for and the years you played.
2. What was your first impression, or later general feelings about the league?
3. Describe your most memorable or favorite moment.
4. Describe your favorite personal achievement.
5. Describe any funny stories from games, practices, or times around
the ball fields.

Also, please spread the word to any and all who might be
interested. I want to include as many as possible. Thanks to all.
The chapter is the best part of the book and it's all because of the
people who have responded.

Sincerely,
Rob

Charles-St. Mary's Baseball League Night Out

Friday, August 22nd at Regency Furniture Stadium

The Charles County Commissioners are dedicating a plaque to John Thomas "Doc" Parran at the entrance of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs' Regency Furniture Stadium on Friday, August 22, 2008. They would enjoy seeing as many CHASM players/fans (both past and present) as possible for the Blue Crabs game occuring afterwards.

For those of you who did not know Mr. Parran, he was an integral part of the Indian Head Indians teams from the late 1940's until his last active year (1976) and beyond. He remained an interested fan of our league well after his playing days and annually donated the league's Most Valuable Player trophy up until his death in 2006. He was a former Maryland State Senator, a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, and served as a member of the County Commissioners of Charles County. He helped found the Tri-County Council, was involved with the College of Southern Maryland, the Potomac River Fisheries Commission, and was a founding member of the Board of Governors of the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center.

There will be several of Mr. Parran's past Indian Head teammates in attendance for the game on the 22nd. They will be announced over the P.A. System during a brief pre-game ceremony and gather at the pitcher's mound with the county commissioners. One of the former Indians will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and all fans will view a slide show about Mr. Parran on the stadium's video screen. The announcer will also give a welcome to all members of the Charles-St. Mary's League in attendance.

The Commissioners, the Blue Crabs, and our own league encourage all of you to attend to create a large showing of support for one of our founding Charles-St. Mary's League members. It will be a great time to see everyone.

(Unfortunately, due to the large number of people involved with our league over the past 62 years, attendees will have to purchase their own ticket into the game that evening)

Information Needed

Dear friends,

Please help me find missing history from the Charles-St. Mary’s Baseball League.  I am currently writing a book about the league covering the years 1986 to present.  Why 1986?  William “Doc” Close wrote a comprehensive book, A Sandlot Saga, that covered the league’s inaugural year 1947 through 1985.  1986 seemed like a good starting point to pick up where Doc Close left off.

Although the book will concentrate primarily on 1986-present, I hope to accomplish a secondary purpose of rebuilding some of the league’s missing statistical archives and include them in the book as well.  Specifically, I’d like to include award winners and batting/pitching leaders for ALL years, 1947 and onward.  A lot of the older data had been kept at the Legion Post 82 in LaPlata but, unfortunately, it was destroyed.

That data can be restored however through scrapbooks, trophies, newspapers, and memories of players, officers, fans, etc.  I have filled in some of the holes, but am seeking your help to recover as much more as possible.  Please find the enclosed list of missing data and respond if you have anything that might help.  Thanks in advance for the assistance and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Rob Adams

Events

2005 Playoffs

Saturday, September 10th and Sunday, September 11th at Legion Field

Game 1 - Saturday, 12:00pm

St. Mary's vs. Bumpy Oak

Preview

In the opening game, the top seeded Bombers will be looking to avenge their 2004 playoff elimination loss. In that game, Bumpy Oak jumped up early on the Door by scoring seven runs in the first inning only to see that lead erased by St. Mary's scoring twice in the second and once in the third before a six run fourth inning. Offensive highlights in the game included a grand slam by Jim Tanavage and a solo shot by Steve Zumpano. Bumpy Oak did defeat St. Mary's in round one of the 2004 playoffs 7-2. In their last six meetings including the playoffs the Bombers have taken four of six from the Door.

Game 2 - Saturday, 3:00pm

Combine vs. Legion

Preview

The second game of the first playoff round features the second and third seeds, but are teams with records matching that of the top seeded Bumpy Oak at 12-7. The Legion club, which stood atop the standings for most of the 2005 season has convincingly established itself as a top contender after not qualifying for the playoffs in 2004. A mix of young talent and veteran leadership has proven to be a fitting mix. Combine has done little to suggest it is ready to relinquish it's 2004 championship crown. The club has remained among the top teams throughout the season through consistency in all areas of play. The two clubs split the season series 2-2.

Game 3 - Sunday, 12:00pm

Loser of Game 1 vs. Loser of Game 2

Game 4 - Sunday, 3:00pm

Winner of Game 1 vs. Winner of Game 2

St. Mary's starts off the 2005 campaign looking to build on the playoff runner up finish from 2004. Combine will be looking to continue their championship ways of 2004 and remain unbeaten after a week one win against the Natty Bohs. Game Previews

10:00am Bumpy Oak vs. Redhawks

Bumpy Oak looks to start off strong after a disappointing playoff exit in 2004. The Bombers have been

consistently among the league's best teams, winning two of the last three championships.

After taking two of three from Bumpy Oak in the 2004 regular season, the Redhawks, coming off their first

playoff appearances, look to prove they belong among the CHASM top four. This team has made great

progress in its first two seasons and seeks to build on that in 2005.

1:00pm Combine vs. Western Charles

The defending champs, always among the league's elite, look to continue where they left off in 2004. After

taking the regular season title and sweeping through the playoffs, the team is prized to make a strong start

behind 2004 Manager of the Year, Bill DeAtley.

Western Charles begins its first season without the guidance of 2003 Manager of the Year John Klopfer Jr. who passed

away last August. New manager John Klopfer III will be leading the team now in the attempt to establish consistency

and emerge as one of the top CHASM teams. After dropping two of three from the league champs in 2004, the

Natty Boh's look to build on the late success of winning its last four games.

4:00pm Waldorf vs. Legion

Starting his first full season as manager, Chris Boyce will be leading the Phillies in their 2005 campaign to reach the

playoffs and establish themselves as a CHASM stronghold. Waldorf, with frequent surprising upsets, look to avenge

three 2004 loses to the Legion club.

Legion, coming off a strong playoff push late in 2004, looks to build on that improvement and get off to a

strong start in 2005. Several key pickups could prove to catapult this team into contention once again. After losing two of

three to Waldorf in 2003, the team rebounded by taking all three in 2004 and looks to continue that streak in week one.

St. Mary's receives first week bye

Coming off a 2004 championship game loss to Combine after pulling off an exciting playoff game comback vs. Bumpy Oak

the Door look to start off strong in 2005, but will have to wait until week two to make their debut as the St. Mary's club gets

the bye in week one.

Sincerely,

Rob Adams
